Preparation of City Sanitation Plan for Birendranagar Municipality

Collaborating Organizations: SNV- Netherlands Development Organization Nepal

NDRI -PL has been carrying out ‘City Sanitation Plan (CSP), which is conducted in Birendranagar Municipality and is financially supported by SNV Nepal. This project is conducted to uplift the sanitary condition and minimize the public health hazards and environmental degradation in Birendranagar Municipality. It was signed in November 2014.


The overall objective of this project is to prepare a City Sanitation Plan for Birendranagar Municipality in joint partnership with the Municipality which will serve as a practical decision-making tool for short-term and long-term interventions to improve sanitation and related services for the city.  The city sanitation plan of Birendranagar Municipality will also serve as a model and learning exercise to be replicated in other similar towns in Nepal.

The City Sanitation Plan will address the seven sectors which are stated as below:

1.    Access to improved toilets- household,  institutions and public places
2.    On-site sanitation systems- faecal sludge management
3.    Waste water management- Grey water & black water
4.    Storm water management (focusing on localized infiltration and integrating with greenery)
5.    Solid waste Management
6.    Greenery- public parks, greenery belts
7.    Special category solid waste and waste water


Moreover, the CSP process for Birendranagar municipality is envisioned and done for a planning time-frame of 10 years period.  


Literature Review on Food Security/Livelihood and Hazard, Vulerability and Risk Mapping

District Coverage: Morang, Taplejung, Terathum, Sankhuwasabha, Chitwan, Ramechhap, Dhading, Sidhupalchowk and Kathmandu Valley

Nepal Development Research Initiative has successfully completed Welt Hunger Hilfe’s crash project ‘Literature Review for Food Security/ Livelihood and Hazard, Vulnerability and Risk (HVR) Mapping in Selected Districts of Nepal’. The six  days task started intensively from June 1 to 6, 2015, involved preparation of synthesis report on the livelihood/food security and HVR mapping in selected districts (Morang, Taplejung, Terathum, Sankhuwasabha, Chitwan, Ramechhap, Dhading, SIndhupalchowk, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur and Kathmandu) including the details of earthquake and its destruction, summary of key publications in reviewed sectors, Key organization and people details for WHH consultation for program development, planning and details of on-going and completed projects in food security/livelihood sectors and HVR sectors. Food Security Expert Dr. H Dahal and Disaster Expert Professor Dr. T N Bhattarai had led the project.


Final Evaluation of Promoting Women's Economic Leadership in Nepal

The project on 'Final Evaluation of Promoting Women's Economic Leadership in Nepal' was implimented in collaboration with Oxfam in Dailekh, Surkhet and Dandeldhura districts of Nepal.
